Guest post: EMƎ on creating SUPA Versio
Today, we chat with EMƎ on the creative processes behind his custom SUPA Versio firmware, as well as a bit about his musical background and inspirations.
What inspired you to create SUPA Versio?
I was inspired to make my firmwares initially because I really wanted loads of modules but didn't have the rackspace to fit new stuff, so I looked into programming the Versio as I knew it was open source and very open ended.
Did the firmware end up evolving beyond your original idea?
All my firmwares spiralled into their own thing as I kept pushing features into more of an original territory. For example SUPA was inspired by the make noise Spectraphon along with the Qubit aurora and kind of blended the two into a ridiculous vocoder firmware.
What’s your musical background?
I've been musical all my life and have a range of skill in different instruments, mainly the drums as I like a good rhythm.
How did you get into modular?
About 2 years ago I wanted to turn my weird ideas into actual songs and sounds rather than just thinking about them and my "synth progression" naturally evolved into Modular all the way from a PO33 which was a large leap in such a short time.
How did you start developing for the Versio platform?
The Versio Examples on Daisy's platform was extremely helpful and a great insight into how to start working on the Versio, overall it made the process smooth and seamless and within a couple of days my first firmware Cosmicus was born.
What part of SUPA are you personally most proud of?
I really like the macro blur on SUPA this took alot of tuning and tweaking to get the swells and chords correct to suit my ideal taste.
What tools, languages, or workflows did you use during development?
Entirely C++ in a simple environment with a little bit of backend support from AI which is a great tool if used correctly. With the workflow part I got accustomed to quickly using a GIT bash terminal to build the firmwares super quickly to allow for rapid testing and tweaking.
Do you have any advice for people interested in creating their own firmware?
Go for it. The world is your oyster when It comes to musical ideas and creations and the Versio platform is definitely a great place to start in developing eurorack firmwares.
